trying to be better than I was yesterday… hockey meme explained

better-each-day-hockey-meme

At my age… I am in no competition with anyone but myself…  when the doctors said… “Brent you need exercise at your age or you’ll die…”  Pretty much put it all in perspective =)….  I didn’t want to join a gym. I am not a person that likes to get up and run 5 miles.   Golf wasn’t enough cardio they tell me.   Anyways, you get my point.

When I moved to the area I dwell in now.  It was/is a big hockey town.  With 3 rinks all with in 20 minutes or less of each other.  It made sense to me to see if hockey was the right sport.  I noticed an outdoor rink minutes from my house.   Pulled together what equipment I had left from when I played over 15 years ago.  Headed to the outdoor rink and was completely hooked!    That is all it took and now on my 3rd year back in the game.  I find myself playing 2 nights a week on the ice.   I might not be the best in shape nor fastest on the ice but I’m holding my own and notice within myself that I am getting better each time.   Isn’t that what it is all about?   If you have the desire… anything is possible.

Thanks to Hockey Shot for all their off ice training devices they sell.  I find myself enjoying off ice training just as much as playing a game.  If they only had this stuff 35 years ago… things might of been different!

First Attempt In Learning = Fail hockey meme

I get so many messages from people asking me:

“how can I get started back into hockey?”
or
“I want to get back into hockey but I am out of shape”
or
“hockey is to expensive I can’t afford it”
or the best one…
“I don’t know how to play and don’t want to make a fool out of myself”

Well today I am going to tackle that last one first!   First off it is “OK” not to know how to play… but you have to JUST START… Hence my FAIL = First Attempt In Learning Hockey Meme…  With that in mind you can do a little research on the web first!   There are so many great resources on the internet such as this page UCH or the Following pages: (not in any particular order)

  1. http://hockeytutorial.com/ My good friend Chris and his great hockey Tutorial page
  2. http://weisstechhockey.com/  Jeremy Weiss great hockey coaching tutorials
  3. http://howtohockey.com/ Jeremy Rupke great hockey coaching tutorials
  4. Hockey Shot:  Amazing off-ice hockey training equipment at it’s best!

Ice hockey is the purest form of the sport… doesn’t mean it is the only hockey available to you…  My good friend Dave Scioscia always reminds me “Hockey is hockey”  and as simple as that sounds… Hockey can be played on the ice, on foot, street, roller, sled, floor, knee, etc.. you get my point…    So when I hear people say “I don’t know how to skate or I don’t skate well or I haven’t skated since I was a kid” those excuses don’t apply.

There are plenty of growing activities out there that offer recreational floor hockey or even Adult Clinics that will teach you how to skate, shoot, drills, etc…   just use that little thing called “google” and do a few searches in your town/area…  Even go to the local ice rink and ask for information on adult instructional Leagues or AIL…  Hockey gives you so much opportunity that wasn’t there when we where kids… So get out there and don’t be afraid to fail…  and if you feel like you’ve failed just remember it was your FIRST ATTEMPT IN LEARNING!

Play today thank yourself tomorrow…

Nothing more rewarding then doing something for well being… This doesn’t come into play as much for all you young hockey players… but for us over 35 geezers it does…  When you are young you have to burn off all this energy you have stored up… energy levels are high and you just want to go out and give it everything ya got… wake up and do it all again tomorrow… well for us older guys or gals for that matter we don’t have that kind of energy… it takes almost everything we got to get back out there but is that an excuse?  No… it doesn’t fly because when you get out on to that ice and glide around and shoot some pucks… it makes it all worth it….
